I am just an eider duck, a gammy bird, squawking the news, stories and gossip from the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador. “Gamming” was a term for when passing sailing ships would drop sails and come alongside to tell the news of the port they had just come.
The Gammy Bird is also the name of the fictitious rural Newfoundland newspaper in E Annie Proulx’s novel The Shipping News.
