ST. JOHN’S, NL – Mason Gill, a Grade 3 student at Octagon Pond Elementary won the Elks Club Avalon Spelling Bee and will represent the province at the National Spelling Bee in Ottawa next month.

The competition started out with twenty competitors and took two hours to whittle down to the final two, Mason and Ben Parsons, a Grade 8 student from Juniper Ridge.

The Pronouncer, Shannon Sullivan, a Professor of Math at Memorial University, had to switch to a harder list of words after a few rounds as the competitors were nailing all the spellings in the primary list.

With just Mason and Ben on the stage it was a tense few minutes as they went into four rounds of a “spell off”, think of four overtimes in a hockey game, before Mason got a correct spelling and won the match.

They were lots of cheers and a few tears.
