ST JOHN’S, NL. – The 2025 forest fire season started hot and fast this week with a major fire at Adam’s Cove in Conception Bay north with other fires in Fermuse on the Southern Shore, Harding Pond in Holyrood near Butter Pot Provincial Park and at Joe’s Lake near Badger in central.
In Small Point-Broad Cove-Blackhead-Adam’s Cove area at least 15 homes have been lost but no injuries reported. The community has a population of approximate 400 people plus seasonal residents.
A State of Emergency has been declared and people have been evacuated from the area. Fire crews and RCMP are currently on scene between the communities of Adams Cove and Western Bay. Route 70 is closed and impassable between Cave Lane in Adam’s Cove and River Loop Road in Western Bay.
Fog this morning have kept air tankers on the ground with hopes it will clear this afternoon again.
Winds are high and from the west blowing the smoke west out to sea so air quality has not become an issue yet.
