A Young Guy in Baggy Hip-Hop Shorts – Skeets of Bannerman Park

ST JOHN’S, NL – After a run of cold and drizzly weather it was hot Saturday afternoon. The pool was open. The splash pad was crowded. There was a line-up at the snack bar. Old people slowly walking with canes somehow avoided being hit by small children learning how to ride scooters.

The young guy dressed in black was by himself. He seemed to be walking with a purpose. Like he had someplace to be. He wasn’t looking at the young girls looking at the young boys with skateboards. Maybe he was late getting to where he was going because it wasn’t like he was strolling along daydreaming.

The baggy black shorts he was wearing seemed dated, but right on him. Same for the black t-shirt and black socks and black sneakers. A black baseball hat worn backwards would complete the outfit, but the young guy was wearing, on a hot, hot, day a black toque like something a person would wear in the winter.

An old guy on the bench by the clock noticed the young guy in black striding through the crowd. As the young guy in black passed by the old guy on the bench he must have sensed the old man looking at him. He looked back at the old guy. The old guy could have said “Hello” or “Hiya” or “Hey Man” or “Nice day”, but he chose to say, “How are ya doing?”

The young guy dressed in black replied “Good enough” and he didn’t break stride as he passed by the old guy on his way to wherever he was going.
