ARNOLD’S COVE, NL – The Cenovus Energy West White Rose offshore oil project gets one more phase closer to production. The single tower concrete base of the offshore production platform was moved from it construction dock at Argentia, Newfoundland into Placentia Bay last week to await the arrival of the topsides module from Ingleside, Texas where it is under construction by Kiewit Offshore Services . It is expected to arrive by heavy lift ship in Newfoundland sometime in June.
The concrete base is 145 metres tall and weighs 200,000 tonnes
The White Rose offshore oil project is operated by Cenovus Energy, Inc. and is located in 120 metres of water in the Jeanne d’Arc Basin oil fields on the Grand Banks of Newfoundland on the east coast of Canada 350 km from St John’s, Newfoundland.

Founded by Husky Energy it went into production on November 12, 2005 with the first shipment of oil from the field delivered to the Irving Oil Refinery on December 6, 2005.
The field consists of both oil and gas pools, including the South White Rose oil pool. The oil pool covers approximately 40 square kilometres and contains an estimated 440 million barrels (70,000,000 m3) of recoverable oil.
It was the third east coast offshore oil field to go into production after Hibernia and Terra Nova fields.
Now twenty years old the reservoir is being reduced and Cenovus has not abandoned the well but opted to refit its existing floating production ship, the Sea Rose FPSO, and build the new production platform to access satellite reservoirs known as West White Rose. It will use subsea infrastructure to “tie-back” West White Rose to the Searose production and storage vessel.
First oil from the West White Rose extension is expected in 2026.
