ST. JOHNS, NL – July 1st marks Memorial Day in Newfoundland and Labrador. On this date in 1916 The 1st Battalion, Royal Newfoundland Regiment fought at the Battle of Beaumont-Hamel during the Battle of the Somme in WWI suffering devastating losses with over 700 men killed. Since then this date has been Memorial Day for all veterans in Newfoundland and Labrador with ceremonies at the National War Memorial and Tomb of The Unknown Soldier in St John’s. The origins of the regiment date back to 1795.
